The Top 5 of 30

By Gooch | January 19, 2010

I started this post well before my birthday january 9th, but haven’t gotten to post it for various reasons (mainly laziness), so it may sound dated.

This birthday, I’m presenting the top 5 of 30. Lots of various events have happened during this year of life (some significant, some not) that have made this year quite an interesting one, but some of them stick out much more than others.

First some honorable mentions/highlights: Discovering the entirety of Rammstein’s catalog (for years all I had was Sehnsucht); the epic game that is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (with a shoutout to the MR04 clan); my first game at the new Yankee Stadium (what a gorgeous ballpark); discovering the world of Autocross (getting to act like a race car driver, even if its in a parking lot is sooooooooo much fun); Palombo bread pudding (I LOVE it!)

And now the Top 5:

5. Great Grandma passing: It happened the last Saturday before Christmas, and set the one for the upcoming holiday. Family gathered in North Carolina to pay their last respects. I did not know what impact it would have on me until the service and I’m glad that I went. Christmas wasn’t the same this year, but that’s ok. In hindsight, I wish I had seen her at least once more, even if it was only to hear “Bill Junior”.

4. Darkside of Thirty: This was the scavenger hunt set up by one of my best compatriots, Russ in celebration of me turning 30. It was originally supposed to be my actual birthday weekend, but due to snow (DAMN SNOW!) it was pushed back until the following weekend. It was my own little Bond andventure with all of my wonderful Jersey folks involved in some way. Jo was the lovely Miss Moneypenny along for the ride and hijinks the covered the Bronx and Jersey ending up in Atlantic City. Jo and I then ended up spending the night down there. A wonderful weekend to ring in 30. And for those who know the story, I present:

3. The Yankees winning #27: Anyone who knows me knows I’m a huge Yankee fan. Pretty much my life becomes consumed with the game. If I’m not watching it at home, I’m following it on my phone or radio. The 2009 season was such a great season. I went to a few games and I love the new ballpark. It wasn;t nice having to watch the Red Sox win the first 8 games against us or the Angels sweep us right before the All-Star break, but the second half of the season was fantastic, including the Yankees winning 9 of the last 10 against Boston (including that epic 4 game sweep at home). The playoffs were otherworldly, with A-Rod performing like many say he should. The World Series was epic, but the good guys won. I went to the parade and reveled in the championship along with everyone else.

2 & 1. Getting my own place: Ok ok so this one is so significant, that it gets 2 spots. What can I say? Having my own place has been the most important event of 30. It’s just that big. It made me say “why didn’t I do this before?” The freedom, not being in a toxic environment. Sure I can’t spend like I used to but there so much more worth in the peace of mind I have now, not to mention the headaches I no longer have to deal with. One of the things I’ve started doing is cooking more and enjoying it. There’s just so much to being totally on your own that makes it so different and I really like it.
